May 26, 2011 Web Links won't open in Outlook 2003 When I try to open a web hyperlink in my Outlook 2003 mail, I get a pop up saying it is 'denied due to security settings on this computer.' I can open hyperlinks in Hot Mail just fine. Oct 23, 2012 Microsoft Office web links embedded in software open in MS Word Hi guys, I have no problem opening web pages in my browser, but whenever I click on a link embedded in some software (as simple as clicking Online Help or About This Software link on the menu), the resulting web page opens in MS Word, totally messed up.

We have been encountering the same problems with Chrome on some Microsoft sites, especially on Windows Store and Xbox Store URL links. Instead of showing those pages, we got an 'This site can't be reached' error.

Noted Microsoft reporter Paul Thurrott of Thurrott.com (via Neowin) was encountering the same issue. His solution, as posted on his Twitter page, is simple. Just clear our the cookies in the Chrome browser, and the Microsoft sites that were not coming up should return.

If you are using Chrome and are encountering these issues, here's how to clear the browser of its cookies. Be aware this will also purge the browser of all your stored passwords as well.

  • Go to 'Settings' in the menu
  • Click on 'Show Advanced Settings'
  • Scroll down and then click on 'Privacy'
  • Click on 'Content Settings'
  • Click on 'All cookies and site data'
  • Finally, click on 'Remove All' to purge your Chrome cookies

So far, there's no explanation on why some Chrome users have been unable to go to certain Microsoft sites, but this procedure should solve the problem for most folks.

Re install Chrome, then make IE your default browser.

I found it was much faster to just change the registry as mentioned above then to have to re-install and then uninstall again.

Or you could just run any other web browser you have installed (since this is a third party browser and you should have IE installed just because) and make it your default.

Opening each browser and surfing works fine. It's when in Outlook and trying to open a link that the issue's are occurring. If you don't install Chrome and only have IE never an issue. Just when installing Chrome and then uninstalling. For some reason the registry won't change IE as default browser.

I just ran into this issue this morning. The regedit didn't work for me. With Outlook closed, I changed IE back to the default browser, opened Outlook and tried the link; the link worked. I closed Outlook and changed Chrome to the default browser, opened Outlook and tried the link; the link worked. A quick fix to solve the users issue.
